You know, it only takes a brief moment to show consideration for someone else, but the positive boost to your daily existence can last much longer. To me, that’s a pretty good ROI.
Today, societies focus on instant gratification (news, information, communication, etc.) challenges that connection – people seem to have less tolerance for the value of the time invested in personal contacts and relationships. At least, that’s my recent perception of it.
We all still need to participate in the human race – it’s the underlying strength in the fabric of our society. For example, I found it disturbing to hear the other day that recent studies have shown that the developing adolescent brain is producing less of the chemicals required to cope with interpersonal interaction. They would rather text, as their preferred form of communication than have an actual conversation. How profoundly sad is that?
Thus, I am making a focus of my time here to continue the time-honored practice of talking to people, smiling at strangers, meeting people face-to-face and acknowledging their presence in society.
Anyone care to join me?
