Another Year in the Books

Here comes 2012.

What have I done to “get ready” for the New Year? Well, in a word: survived. Haven’t we all?

Despite the best efforts of the world as we now know it, we middle class working stiffs are still here, stronger for the battle and savvier for the politics. We are not going anywhere, so get used to it.

I am most grateful for the interviews I’ve had over the past 3 or 4 weeks. In my profession, this is unheard of, even in the best of times. I am heartened by the more personal contact (both telephonic and face-to-face) I have experienced. Thank you!

So, I am expecting at least a month of “looking back” on the year that was…what a colossal waste of time and energy! What can possibly be gleaned from that practice that will make my life better? It is purely a media-driven practice that probably is a benefit to those people who were too dense to understand, or just not paying attention to what just happened in our world. Beyond that, I can see no practical value in this collective reminiscence. Well, at least it gives the media pundits work until the elections get cranked up.

Isn’t that a joke? There are actually jobs where – regardless of whether you are right or wrong – you can just get a paycheck for showing up with your opinions on your sleeve, and blabbering whatever you think is the “truth”:

  • Politician
  • Economist
  • Meteorologist
  • Political Commentator
  • Bank Executive

Where do I sign up? Whatever forum these jokers pick to get their opinions out, it’s all still that – opinions. Every one of them is not held accountable for their screw-ups. But they still get paid. And we still listen to their drivel. I’ll admit…if someone wanted to “discover” my meager literary offerings on this blog and put me on TV to speak of the views of a common man, I’d be on it in a heartbeat. Can you tell I had considered this scenario before…? And my apologies to the meteorologists out there – it’s just that I find myself having a higher degree of accuracy in my “forecasts” than most of you on TV or radio.

Holidays are nice for family gatherings, reconnecting with the people who are special to us and letting them know how much they mean to us. But I find it all loses its humanity when we get those sentiments in any e-mailed format…and the stores already have their Valentine’s Day products on the shelves.

Am I ready for 2012? That’s like asking if I am ready for Monday.

Let’s get on with it.
