Total(ly) Recall

I know I’m not the only person that feels this way…

I am sick and tired of the political crap going on in DC surrounding the present drama-du-jour, our country’s economic standing in the global community.  Yeah, it’s about the debt ceiling – mostly.  And it is not about the amount of debt we’re leaving for future generations (that number isn’t changing in the immediate future.)  This is all about political partisanship, childish bickering, bad economic policy and plain loss of touch with reality.  And, when you get right down to it, our electoids are completely ineffective.

I believe their oath says:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”

It seems to me that several members of the House and Senate appear to be evading their responsibilities to the public they serve for the purposes of political gain.  So, I put the following forth for the public’s consideration:

Recall them all.  Now.

Let’s put people in those seats that understand the needs of the citizens in this country.

Or, until then, we take away the pay and benefits of the people in office.  Why pay them anything?  They’re not doing their jobs anyway!

Anyone in office, who is resistant to negotiating an agreement as of right now deserves nothing more than a ticket home – you’re all fired.

Recall them all.  Now.

How can I not enjoy sitting here at Starbucks, people watching?  Summer is definitely here in Seattle, regardless of the weather.  While the country seems to be chewing off its own limbs for one side to be “right” and the other “wrong,” what we value most is still there, waiting for us to rediscover the joy we find lacking in our lives.

I’m sitting here listening to a rather wide variety of music while I write this, looking for the positive feelings that I know are there, buried under the crap we are bombarded with every day.  Right now, it’s the Beastie Boys “You Have to Fight for Your Right to Party”.  Hey, when you get down to it, you do.  It’s all your decision to make – whether to be happy, or not.  We are 100% responsible for our lives and where we are.  That’s a hard pill to swallow.  But when you do, you can work on change from a position of power – not a victim of the whims of the world.

We are the ones in control of our destiny, folks.  Not the politicians, the President, the
pundits or the peckerheads who tell us what we should be feeling/doing/saying/believing (Beck, Limbaugh and the like.)  When did we relinquish the control of our own intellect?  We know that this country was founded by the persecuted masses who sought freedom and equality in the light of humanity and community:

“When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.”

When and where did we stray from this?  I, for one, do not choose to listen to the bullshit being slung from on-high.  I make my own choices, decisions and opinions because I am responsible for my life and how I live it.  What is right or wrong for you is not the same as what is right or wrong for me – don’t ever try to tell me otherwise.  Maybe it’s a character flaw, but I am stubborn that way.

What I want to know is this – when did we throw out the pledge our founding fathers signed up for? –

Test Subject: Me

Last week, I had the distinct honor of participating in what was called an “interiors test” for a large local aircraft manufacturer…okay, Boeing.  I was taken on a simulated 5 1/2 hour flight to Honolulu…<sigh>…  I can tell you that it was an adventure, regardless of the destination.

7:30 a.m.  As I am leaving home, my wonderful wife kisses me goodbye.  She also says something to the effect of “I hope you don’t end up next to somebody that likes to talk the entire flight.”  I smile and say “Yeah, me too.”

7:45 a.m.  Report to the research company bus that would take us to the test location.  I know I am a little early, but, as in a real travel situation, I don’t like to run to catch a plane.  I am the second person (besides the bus driver.)

Uh oh.

The first person is an overweight woman who appears to be talking non-stop with the bus driver.  And I mean non-stop.

I breathe deeply and try to distance myself from her.  I resolve that I will not sit next to – or anywhere near – this person.  I make every effort not to make eye contact with her as I move to an open bus seat.  I’m about 3 rows from her…if I can just…

“Don’t you think so?”

Damn.

Thinking quickly, I decided to use a tactic that had worked for me in the past – I smiled and kept on walking.

“Don’t you?”

Shoot.

“I really don’t think anything before I’ve gotten at least one cup of coffee in me,” I replied, gesturing with the Starbucks venti drip I was carrying.

She turned back to the driver.  Made it…

The next person on the bus was the representative from the research company.  I could also see more “subjects” arriving behind her.

“Okay, I need you two to move to seats at the rear of the bus to help us get you checked in.”

What?  I begin to feel a sense of dread come over me, as we dutifully change our seats.

The next subject was a young man who would serve as the buffer I was looking for – he loved to talk, and these two paired up in no time.  Safe.  Or was I?  We were going to be sitting a mock-up of an airplane cabin for 5 1/2 hours on a simulated flight.  While this guy would be sitting on one side of this woman, I could still be sitting on the other side!  And she would barely fit into a standard coach seat.  Being that this was a test situation, I could not ask to have my seat assignment changed.  What was I in for?

They completed checking everyone in, and the bus proceeded across the street into the test facility.  The drill was that we would be given written surveys approximately every hour, at which time they would take pulse and blood gas readings.  We would be served snacks, beverages and lunch (how realistic is that?)  We could watch movies on portable DVD players, and do what ever we brought along to do for the “trip.”  It all sounded pretty good, as long as I did not have to sit next to this person.

With a sense of resignation, we trooped down the large hallway to the mock-up, located in an anechoic chamber near one end of the building.  We climber the steep steel stairs to the mock-up and stepped inside.  To my great relief, the seating arrangement was 2-3-2…two seats on the left, 3 seats in the middle and 2 seats on the right.  My seat assignment put me on the aisle of the middle 3 seats – yes!!  Any distance was appreciated.

As the simulation progressed, the sound of jet engines vibrated through the fixed cabin (thank God they weren’t going to be simulating turbulence,) these two people would not stop talking!  There was wayyy too much sharing going on.  I found myself wondering if I wasn’t being overly critical.  It was at that exact moment, I noticed the young woman sitting next to me (sketching the whole time) look up over the top of her pad of paper at these two, then at me, and ask me –

“Do you think they will ever shut up?”

I was not alone.

“I don’t think it’s looking good” I replied.

All I can say is “thank God” they handed out the DVD players and movies.  Once they plugged in, we all enjoyed a two-hour period of peace.

Until the scheduled surveys were handed out, that is.  They had to chat about every question and the meaning of this and that.  The test administrator had to tell them to be quiet about discussing the surveys, as their talking kept everyone else from concentrating on their own answers.  So, the movies (and the food) kept their mouths quiet at certain times.

After that, it was a moderately tolerable experience.  And we were compensated nicely.  When I got home and told my wife of the experience, we both had a pretty good laugh at her “reverse” prediction.

All-in-all, it was a memorable experience.  I would recommend it.

Anyone else tired of the same pathetic political rhetoric in this country?  The GOP (Group of Old People) seems to want to continue to balance the books for their mistakes on the backs of the middle class.  And thanks to the huge influx of people to the poorer classes provided by the previous administration, they seem to think that cutting spending is the only way out of their mess.

The attitude is “By God, I am right and I am going to prove it if it kills my constituency” is the lamest form of response in this economic mess.

Look at it this way, if the U.S. was a business that was failing, how would I keep it open?  Keep cutting expenses until I was the only “employee” left to do all the work?  No.  I would cut expenses as necessary to the minimum required to maintain the quality of the product I produce along with increasing the amount of revenue coming in to the enterprise by going after sales and other diversified sources of income.  It’s that simple, folks.

If the top 2% doesn’t start paying it’s fair share of the burden of maintaining this country and lifestyle we love for everyone, we are in for a modern-day version of a peasant revolution.  To be blunt, the folks in Washington – Republicans and Democrats alike – had better collectively “grow a pair” and join the ranks of responsible adults and do the right thing.

Ya Gotta Love It

It’s been a while.  I’ve always heard that blogging takes commitment (it does) and discipline (yup) and a lot of motivation.  The latter, I have been lacking in the past few weeks.  As I wait for my mentees to arrive for our monthly meeting, I felt enough of a
sparks to begin – yet again – to put something out there to move me along this journey called life.

I have been looking for a job in my chosen profession (architecture) for a while now.  Needless to say, building activity has seen a drop in the past couple of years.  Recently, though, things seem to be picking up, as I find more openings being advertised.  Hope springs eternal, so I am once again focusing “on the hunt.”

There are ups and downs in this process.  And the downs are made even more impersonal
by the impact of the internet on job hunting.  Resumes no longer count as much as they did in years past.  What counts most is who you know more than what you know.  That’s how you get your foot in the door, to get someone to even talk to you.  It’s so easy for people to hit <delete> and make you, your resume, your portfolio, whatever disappear – all that hard work, gone.  You don’t even get a chance to say “hello” to a real person.

It’s so easy to think you are connected with a real person in this type of environment, when you are actually not.  Young people would actually rather text a friend standing 20 feet away than go over and have a face-to-face conversation – they are lacking the brain chemistry that supports the development of interpersonal relationships.  When we find our society producing these kinds of impacts, I have to wonder when we are going to
remember that we “rule the tool” and it doesn’t rule us.

I must be a relic.  I enjoy meeting new people, connecting with them face to face and
helping in whatever way I can to enrich and be a positive impact on their lives.  I alone define the quality of my communications – and I am 100% responsible for it.

You Gotta Believe…

“You gotta believe…”

Think about it.  We’re in one of the worst economic “situations” since the Depression, and everyone is being tested in some manner.  Everywhere you turn, we hear what others think is going to happen – how long it’s going to continue, how high the gas prices will go, how the jobs situation will develop, etc.  And most people will take these “beliefs” as their own.  After all, if it was read somewhere, or heard on TV/Internet/etc, it must be true, right?

Oh how misguided you are, my friend.

You and I are each 100% responsible for our lives and where we are in this world.  We got to this point entirely of our own doing, by following our own beliefs.  So, it stands to reason, that the only way we can make effective use of this power to make changes in our world is to use the power of our beliefs.  Make sense so far?

If the Wright brothers had not believed in the miracle of human flight, aviation and modern air travel may have developed on an entirely different path…or not at all.  If their belief fed the vision they had for something that had not existed in the world to that point, we would still be standing on the ground watching the birds.  Their belief brought into existence technology that has widespread applications to this day.  All because they chose to believe.

So, let me pose this question to you:  If we have this powerful means to alter our lives at our disposal, why do we constantly let the media pundits, politicians, talking heads, talk radio hosts, etc. spew forth their drivel that whips us into such a frenzy that then defines our reality?  At our expense, no less!

And, even if you don’t actually ascribe to this mind-set, isn’t even the slightest possibility of this power such a profound improvement over the what we have now worthy of consideration?

If this concept even remotely tests your beliefs, then there is a spark of hope.

But you gotta believe

Our Individual Environment

The “built” environment is a term that seems to catch a lot of people off-guard:

“What’s that?”

“What do you mean by that?”

“Huh?”

And when you explain that the built environment is what we are in when we are in any place created by us – buildings, parks, communities, office cubicle, what-have-you, you see a new light of understanding appear that is very cool to experience. And it brings a whole new level of understanding to what we – as architects – bring to the table. It also compels us, as professionals, to look beyond what we’ve done in creating the buildings that make up our cities. Especially now, with the upheaval in our profession, we have to show how that experience and skill relates to our lives where ever we are. What we do can – and does – translate beyond the constructed walls we’ve built.

Every time someone paints a room, hangs a picture, plays music, has a conversation, or contemplates solutions to the issues facing our society it contributes to the building of our environment. Take coffee shops for instance. It is so many different things to different individuals – a place to read, to study to meet friend, to do work, to connect with community…to name but a few. And, by being such an accommodating environment, it weaves itself into the fabric of our daily lives, and fades into the background – without further consideration or thought. It’s one of the dependable things that we hang on to, in a world that seems less and less dependable.

Our environment creates the means to nurture our spirits and supports our successes. W. Clement Stone once said “You are a product of your environment. So choose the environment that will best develop you toward your objective. Analyze your life in terms of its environment. Are the things around you helping you toward success – or are they holding you back?” In terms of our profession, it seems pretty clear that we have to carefully consider our responsibility not only to the ecological environment, but to the environment that dwells within each one of us.

Some People Just Don’t Get It

It never ceases to amaze me how few real answers we get from people in power – specifically politicians.  Really, isn’t government us to begin with?  Shouldn’t we be mindful of how we can help each other?  The recent slip-o-the-lip by Representative Pence differentiating between “Republican” people and “American” people really hits home in this regard. While the rest of us are suffering through this recession we didn’t create, by doing nothing more than our jobs and living by the law of the land, these “Americans” are running around like kids with ADHD and not addressing the problem and working on our behalf to create what we need for this country’s recovery –

JOBS.

I don’t care who you are, how much schooling you’ve had (or not had,) where you come from, or how much you have (or don’t have,) if you can’t see the problem we’re all facing you are just plain blind. And, say you do see the problem…GOOD JOB! Now you have to work on behalf of your constituency to address the solution to the problem – right. Like that’s going to happen any time soon. Not when you have the political environment in D.C. that undermines any sort of humanity in the way government responds to its citizens – certainly not while the other nitwits are running around screaming about everything but what is needed to address the issue. If we had this kind of leadership in 1941, we’d have attacked Mexico for the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Sort of makes me wonder what language they are speaking in D.C.  They certainly aren’t comprehending what’s being spoken in the other 49 states.

Consideration

You know, it only takes a brief moment to show consideration for someone else, but the positive boost to your daily existence can last much longer. To me, that’s a pretty good ROI.

Today, societies focus on instant gratification (news, information, communication, etc.) challenges that connection – people seem to have less tolerance for the value of the time invested in personal contacts and relationships. At least, that’s my recent perception of it.
We all still need to participate in the human race – it’s the underlying strength in the fabric of our society. For example, I found it disturbing to hear the other day that recent studies have shown that the developing adolescent brain is producing less of the chemicals required to cope with interpersonal interaction. They would rather text, as their preferred form of communication than have an actual conversation. How profoundly sad is that?

Thus, I am making a focus of my time here to continue the time-honored practice of talking to people, smiling at strangers, meeting people face-to-face and acknowledging their presence in society.

Why Blogging?

I’m not entirely sure at the moment. I am sensing that I need to take some action – any action – to invoke change for the better. That’s the key right there…for the better.

I’ve called this the “View from the Curb” because I am finding that the vision of standing outside, on the sidewalk, gives one more of a feeling of connectedness to what is going on in the world. We all want a better life, more money better job, ideal relationship, bigger house, etc. And I can tell you for certain that it’s not to be found hiding inside. If not literally, we have to be open in our minds and imaginations as to the limitless potential we all possess. We are all in this together, so what better way for me to start down this new path than to take advantage of this medium for exchange.

This blog will express my opinions (of course) and hopefully even be a means for me to share some of my hopes, dreams and desires for the better world I want to create. But I also know that there will be those who do not share my views. I have come to accept that. But I want to make this clear – this blog will not be a place for personal attacks, political diatribe, disrespect, etc. I will dump those replies fast enough to make one’s head spin.

Not to say that I won’t slip occasionally – I might. If so, I take responsibility for those instances and will provide the appropriate mea culpas. I don’t know what this experience will be like, how I may “fit in” or how I’ll like it. But taking some action in a direction to manifest change for the better is better than dong nothing at all.

We are in this together, right? So let’s get this party started…
